Case Study: Push Button Visual As-Built Docs

Genesis Energy, a New Zealand owned energy company formed in 1999. Genesis Energy generates nearly one fifth of New Zealand’s electricity via its thermal and renewable power stations. It is also a significant energy retailer – supplying electricity, natural gas and LPG to around 670,000 homes and businesses across the country during 2012.

Genesis Energy’s business goal is to operate as a commercially-focused sustainable company providing responsible energy solutions to its customers – underpinning the way it operates and how it interacts with customers and stakeholders.

Genesis purchased IBM Cognos TM1 in November 2011 to build a Budgeting, Planning & Reporting solution. It also deployed QUBEdocs from Cortell NZ to document the solution and ensure transparency and longevity.

Because QUBEdocs is dynamic and can be executed at the press of a button, Genesis no longer needs to rely on its people to update documentation, as it is now performed automatically. QUBEdocs also allows finance users and data analysts to simulate proposed changes to data, structure or rules within a development environment, so they can understand the implications before making these changes to the live TM1 environment.

QUBEdocs is now being used extensively within the business to take copies of TM1 model design at any point in time, and Genesis has found it to be a highly cost effective way of documenting design, data flows, data relationships, business rules and functionality of the models it has created. It has also proved powerful in supporting baseline release management, a fundamental component of Genesis’ internal systems change control process.
